Best Homeopathic Medicines for Loose Cough Relief Naturally

In homeopathy, the goal is to select a remedy that closely matches the symptoms the body presents—the closer the match, the more effective the remedy. Here are my top remedies for loose coughs:

Hepar sulphuris calcareum is an unusual remedy made up of a combination of both calcium and sulphur that was designed by the father of homeopathy, Hahnemann himself – and it happens to be an excellent loose cough remedy. The cough tends to be aggravated in the morning on waking, and any cold air or getting cold will worsen the cough. Typically the person needing this remedy will either be more sensitive to cold in general or may be more susceptible to coughing when exposed to the cold, so they’ll want to wrap up more than usual. Warm drinks soothe. Sometimes the cough is accompanied by a sore throat.

Pulsatilla is another common remedy for a loose cough but it’s almost polar opposite to Hepar sulph in that the cough is better in the outdoors. It’s a common remedy for kids who cough all the time inside, but as soon as they get outside in the cool open air, they stop. Sometimes the cough can come in fits, with a bit of gagging and even vomiting, but overall, those who need Pulsatilla tend to be a little more sensitive, as well as clingier and whinier than usual. Pulsatilla can also be used for coughs that are constantly changing, now dry, now phlegmy.

Antimonium tartaricum is a loose cough remedy I keep in mind for times when the cough just won’t resolve. and the chest just seems loaded with mucous The breathing can sound rattling but the phlegm is near impossible to bring up completely, though they do feel better if the mucous can be cleared. The person just doesn’t seem to have their full reserves, so it’s often a remedy for the very young or the very old. Lying flat seems to aggravate the cough, so the person will feel better sitting up.

There are other loose cough remedies, so consider seeing a homeopath near you if you can’t find the right fit. Other options could be Ipecacuana for the loose rattly but spasmodic cough that often ends in vomiting – or Natrum sulphuricum for loose coughs that come on in the warm wet weather, with asthmatic type breathing – just two more of many cough remedies.

Dosages: Choose the best suited remedy in a 30ch potency – since this is widely available and you’ll find the body responds quickly. For intense symptoms, repeat every 2 hours for 3 doses then three times daily; for moderate symptoms, repeat every 4 hours for 3 doses and then three times a day; or for mild symptoms, repeat once or twice a day for a few days. In homeopathy, we’re always working with the body’s ability to heal itself so we should see some improvement within 24 hours. Resolution does depend on the strength of the person and the strength of the germ – it you’re susceptible, it can take a little longer for the cough to resolve but if you’re not improving, definitely see a homeopath for a better fit. If the cough persists despite remedies or you’re worried at any point in time due to a fever or lack of energy or any reason, see your doctor for a proper diagnosis.

Schuessler cell salts: I often like to add the Schuessler cell salts when a problem is not resolving or you just feel you need that extra support. While Kali mur 6x is a general tonic for the upper respiratory system, it’s particularly well indicated for the type of cough that is sticky, white and can be either loose or dry. On the other hand, Kali sulph 6x is better suited for the classic loose, rattling cough. Think of it when the cough is super loose and phlegmy. For those rattling chesty coughs so persistent that you can hear the mucous as the person sleeps, add Kali sulph 6x. Like Pulsatilla, the person tends to run warm blooded and feels better outdoors.

Dosages for the cell salts: give hourly for 3-4 hours and then every 2-4 hours depending on the severity of the cough. Unlike for homeopathic remedies, you can use the two remedies together if they seem to fit, as the potencies are low and they work almost like a supplement.
